Knowing what the exchange rate is for your destination is essential to avoid any currency surprises. Download the app and once installed select the currencies you will be needing to purchase and use the CHARTS option for the easiest to follow information.
GOOGLE TRANSLATE
This app has revolutionized travel to countries where you do not speak the local language. Download the app, select your "from" language and your "to" language and then select the way you want to do the translation...... enter the word or words in the panel, speak the word/ words or use the camera option by pointing your mobile phone camera at the word/ words you want translated.
Flight Radar 24/Flight Stats/ Flight Aware
Having all the information about your flights, flight status, boarding gate updates, possible delays, etc makes your travel far easier and less stressful. These apps all give extensive yet different flight information, so it is recommended that you download all three and select the one that suits your requirements the closest.
Nord VPN
Online privacy when travelling is essential and using a VPN is in our opinion is a must-do. Our preferred VPN is NORD VPN.
Download the app and go through the section about what are VPNs and follow the step by step instructions, then select the option for the location of your VPN.
A QR reader on your mobile phone
This is a personal choice based on the make of your mobile phone and the level of your IT ability. But having a QR reader when travelling is now essential as airlines, railways, and most of the places you will visit will require you to scan the QR code at some stage.
The app for the local transport
If you will be spending a number of days in a destination, the app for local transport will make getting around so much easier..... but note that bus, rail and metro systems may be on different apps. The Dutch rail service was our introduction to these benefits..... take a look at www.nc.nl and then download the apps for your destinations.
Staying in touch with family, friends and fellow travellers is made so easy with WHATSAPP. if you switch to a local Sim card while away, be sure to give your temporary number to everyone who you believe must have it in order to stay in touch.
YOUR BANK APP
If you do not have your bank's app on your mobile phone, now is the time to do so. It will give you full banking capability while away, but does bring security challenges which you need to minimise in the event of you losing your phone. Ensure you have strong passwords and avoid public internet connections.... and of course use a VPN for another layer of security (see VPN above).
